Koulas Fort in Kamareddy District of Telangana - How to Reach & Timings: The historical village of Kowlas is in the Jukkal Mandal of the Kamareddy District. Local legend says that Kowlas was first called Kailas because the Kakatiya rulers put up five Sivalingas in the five corners. In the past, the three kingdoms of Kowlas, Bodhan, and Nizamabad were called Indur. Rashtrakutas built Kowlas Fort right where it is now in the 9th century CE. In the third quarter of the 10th century CE, the Chalukyas of the Kalyani dynasty took over the Fort. Later, the Kakatiyas of Warangal took over the mud fort and was part of the Kakatiya kingdom until 1323 CE. After the Muslims came, the Fort was run by the Bahamanis, the Qutb Shahis, the Naikwaries, the Mughals, the Marathas, and finally, the Asaf Jahis.

Raja Gopal Singh Gour was named Raja of Kowlas, and his successors kept this Fort in their control until 1947 CE. The length of the Fort is about one kilometre, and its width is about 700 metres. It has 52 bastions, the most important of which are Hussaini, Mallika, Mula, and Kadika Burz. It also has three temples (Venkateswara, Ramalayam, and Mahadev), two mosques, five wells, four granaries, Rani mahal, an Elephant well (Enugula bavi), and other buildings.

The Jagdamba Bhawani canon, also called Navgarji tope, was the world's most considerable canon at the time. This was made by Raja Gopal Singh in the year 1728 CE. Inside the Fort, there are five more cannons. Koulas Fort is a huge fort that was built in the 14th century. It is in Jukkal Mandal, close to the road from Bidar to Nanded, and covers an area of 6 km2. Kakatiya rulers built this Fort. The Muslim rulers Bahamanis and Qutb Shahis took over this Fort, and then the Nizams moved in.

The semi-Dravidian style was used to build the Koulas Fort, about 1100 feet above sea level. A stream runs around the Fort and acts as a natural moat. The Fort covers 400 acres and is protected by a large wall with solid bastions. The Fort has many beautiful buildings, gates, temples, mosques, and other structures. Around 20 big cannons are spread out across the Fort. It has 52 big and small bastions and a lot of water tanks. The Archaeology Department said that the fort temple and dargah should be kept as they are.

The plans for the Kasikund temple were taken from the Kasi temple. There are also three temples for Rama, Hanuman, and Balaji. Behind the Fort is a temple called Ashtabuji Mata, Jagadamba Mata. The Fort is not well taken care of right now, and the path to get there is full of thorns. Also, the Fort can't be reached when the water level in the stream reaches its peak during the monsoons.

To reach the Koulas Fort, people have to walk 250 mts. To visit the Fort, having a villager from Koulas show you the way is best. The Koulas dam is about 20 km from the Fort. In the winter, a lot of birds come to the dam.
