Yadgir District is one of the
30 districts of
Karnataka state in southern India. This district was carved out from the erstwhile
Gulbarga district as the 30th district of Karnataka on
April 10, 2010. Yadgir town is the administrative headquarters of the district. The district occupies an area of 5,160.88 km². Yadgir has
03 taluks namely:
Shahpur,
Surpur, and
Yadgir. The Bhima River flows through
Yadgir town. Yadgir, popularly called “
Yadavagiri” by the local people, was once the capital of the Yadava Kingdom. It has rich historical and cultural traditions. Yadavas chose Yadgir as their capital and ruled here from 1347 to 1425 AD. Yadgir district has its deep roots in history.

According to the 2011 census, Yadgir district has a population of around 12 lakhs. Its population growth rate over the decade 2001-2011 was 22.67%. Yadgir has a sex ratio of 984 females for every 1000 males, and a literacy rate of 52.36%. It has 1,024 primary schools, 149 high schools, 40 pre-university colleges, six-degree colleges, and 1 polytechnic institute. The district has three hospitals, three ayurvedic hospitals, 37 public health centres, six community health centres, 20 dispensaries and 120 family welfare sub-centres. Dhab Dabi waterfalls are about 5 km from Gurmitkal and about 30 km from Yadgir, a visual treat in monsoon. The sleeping Buddha in Shahapur taluk was formed by four hills resembling a sleeping Buddha.
Yadgir has its own railway station. It has a broad gauge railway which lies between Mumbai and Chennai. It comes under
South Central Railway under the
Guntakal division. It has its own railway branch. State Highway 15 passes through the city, connecting Bijapur and
Hyderabad. Important cities connected by buses from the city are
Bangalore,
Hubli,
Dharwad,
Belgaum,
Sirsi,
Hospet,
Vasco da Gama,
Hyderabad,
Bellary, and
Raichur.
Yadgiri is a place of full natural resources like water (Mainly Two rivers, Krishna and Bhīma), and there is lots of scope for Industrialization in future. One Sugar and fuel industry, “Core Green”, was established near Hiretumkur village. Recently, Rich uranium deposits have been found in the Gogi belt covering the villages of Gogi, Ukkinal, Darshanapur in Shahapur taluk, Thinthini and other places in Surapur taluk. Uranium processed here will be used for defence and power generation purposes.
